Well, this has taken me longer than I thought to come back and blog... only because I've been kinda busy and haven't had too much time.
So, the CBBC deadline came and went, and the notification period of those successful came and went... and, well, I didn't even get a second read by the sounds of things. But, I'm pleased I entered it, as it made me write something at least. And, to a deadline. And, to the correct amount of pages too. So, I think it was a really positive experience.
I didn't catch up with the notes from the Q&A session until my script was almost complete and by then it was too late to change it. So, it really didn't deserve to get through any further. I failed to respect many of the rules and, although I liked my first scene, I wasn't particularly enthusiastic about the others. So, it is of no surprise to me. Also, I tend to write comedy and had few opportunities to inject humour (of my style) through the script. And, I felt quite uncomfortable about that.
So, that's that. I haven't really written too much since. Not because I'm despondent, but because I haven't had time. I felt a bit cross about some of the comments people had left on the CBBC blog post re failure. At the end of the day, if your script wasn't good enough, it just wasn't good enough. With 700 entrants, they chose the best, the ones that stood out. It makes me realise I need to work harder, find a niche, use my skills, plan, sell my work better etc etc. And, I will get there one day. But, as writing for children was never really at the top of my wish list, I need to focus on other opportunities that I am more suited to.
What else has happened... well, it was mini-me's 8th birthday at the weekend. She had the best day EVER!! Particularly due to the trampoline that she received. I coped remarkably well with ten 8 year olds partying in the garden. We made a wishing tree and the kids wrote some beautiful comments, and funny ones too. It's amazing how many want to be Dumbledore... Then, a family party followed, which was great. My Dad got on the trampoline and fell arse over teapot several times. He claims his socks were slippy but I just think he's a bit mad...
I am determined to blog regularly regarding my writing. Today, I watched my favourite local actor in a beautiful piece performed in a school. The piece was written by Louise Roche, a great local writer who is now known worldwide (Girls Night Out), and was performed by a class of Year 6 children, who were all fantastically talented and brilliant. Seeing my favourite actor made me realise I must, must, must get my radio play idea sent out to see if there's any mileage in it. It's based on a piece that was performed locally with the actor as the main character. Initially, I was hoping to make it into a sitcom, but I think I should maybe approach radio first to see how it goes. I also have my first ever idea for a 90 minute play and must get to work on it. These words are not going to write themselves.
Last day of school tomorrow for Mini-Me... she's rather excited, I wonder why?
Well, I've been thinking for quite a while about creating a blog... and so, well, here it is. As a writer, this should be easy, right? Then why have I sat here staring at the screen for minutes, scratching my head and wondering what to write? This is harder than the CBBC script I've just submitted... well, not quite. Anyway, here I am. I'll write some more tomorrow, as I've got to try and make my page look pretty before I get carried away with the writing 'stuff'. Follow me on Twitter, if you wish, where you'll luckily only have to read 140 characters of nonsense rather than a whole page. If there are typos on here, well, I've lost the will due to the heat (that's my excuse). Thanks for popping by, and I'll update this soon...
